The Civic Society is an independent force seeking to improve and protect the heritage of our Town and its open spaces. We are a voluntary organisation which works closely with the Bishop’s Castle Town Council and Shropshire Council, taking active interest in future developments in both Town and local rural areas. Past achievements include involvement with the Old Market Hall site creation, the House on Crutches Museum, the Castle land and Tree Planting. We also publish the popular ‘Town Trails Booklet’ which is available at the Town Hall which is open on a regular basis.
One specific contribution which the Society has undertaken is to organise an annual presentation of awards to private individuals and owners of business premises who, by their care for their buildings or gardens, make an outstanding contribution to the visual amenities of the Town. The categories are Best Wayside Garden, Best Hanging Baskets, Best Kept Private Premises, Best Kept Business Premises and Best New Work or Renovation.
We hold evening talks and discussions on a range of subjects – from gardens to corrugated buildings to apothecary as well as arranging group visits to places of historic interest.
